ON THE VERGE

Continuing on, Fanny meets Mr. Coffee, who, it seems, also travels through time. He provides Fanny with news about her husband, Grover, who had her declared legally dead in 1910, and who died in 1929, "part of a gentle rain of brokers" during the Stock Market Crash.

Finally, the ladies arrive in the 1950s, coming to a gas station in Peligrosa. First, they meet Madame Nhu, who tells them their futures and gives them fortune cookies.

Then Gus, the Esso Station attendant comes out to tell them where and when they are, and gives them a map to the local hotspot.

That hotspot is Nicky Paradise's Paradise Bar and Grill. Whether it's the map, or kismet, they find it, and are welcomed by the music of Nicky's house band.

Nicky himself arrives to welcome the ladies and provide them with their desires: Fanny wants a bath, Mary wants to check out the casino for anthropological study, and Alex wants to meet Ike, who is in residence. Upon returning from the jacuzzi, Fanny is tempted by Nicky when he offers something she had previously osmosed and had a painful yearning for--Cool Whip.

The ladies are seduced by the pleasures of Nicky's. Fanny becomes engaged to Nicky, and Alex pairs up with the Gorge Troll to co-write rock'n'roll tunes.

But Mary is not satisfied. She wants to go on, father into the future. She decides to do so, leaving her friends behind and become a solo sojourner once again. The ladies say goodbye.

Before Mary leaves, the ladies join hands for one final osmotic glimpse into the future.

Mary also shows that she has learned something from her association, and reveals her new trousers.

The ladies take their leave, and Mary continues on into the future--the far future.
